Land Tenure and Climate

The connection between land tenure and climate change is pivotal for sustainable land management and climate resilience. Secure land tenure is essential for promoting sustainable land use practices, which inturn contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation. By securing land rights, communities can better manage natural resources, enhance biodiversity, and increase their resilience to climate change impacts. LDGI focuses on supporting the development and implementation of secure land tenure systems through sustainable land use practices.

LDGI works to strengthen the link between land tenure and climate resilience by supporting initiatives that enhance community-based natural resource management. This is done through supporting communities develop mechanisms to enhance sustainable utilization and management of community land as critical precondition to adopting and implementing actions to build resilience against climate risks.

By working closely with communities, land governance institutions, governments, and relevant stakeholders, LDGI aims to create resilient communities capable of effectively responding to climate challenges and conserving their rich biodiversity

Women Land and Property Rights

Women’s land rights are critical to achieving sustainable development goals such as poverty alleviation, education and conservation, alongside women’s economic empowerment. Secure land and property rights for women leads to increased number of women in leadership, enhanced economic opportunities and security

LDGI works to support women’s land rights through enhancing their knowledge and capacity on legal and policy provisions as well as providing a platform for dialogue with government and other stakeholders.

Biodiversity Conservation and Restoration

Biodiversity conservation is integral to sustainable land use and ecosystem health. Protecting and restoring ecosystems through sound land use practices helps maintain biodiversity, support ecosystem services, and mitigate the impacts of climate change due to land degradation.

LDGI focuses in community-led biodiversity conservation and restoration initiatives. The focus on land governance and conservation is to ensure that land use prioritizes the protection of natural habitats and promotes sustainable agriculture. LDGI works with partners to develop community land use plans that protect ecosystem and promote sustainable land practices. By integrating biodiversity conservation into land governance, communities contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and reduction in land degradation.

Evidence- Based Research

Action-oriented research generates critical insights that inform land governance policies and best practices. By addressing challenges in land administration and management, such research helps bridge the gap between theory and practical application, leading to more effective policy implementation and sustainable land use practices.

LDGI conducts action-oriented research by collaborating with various stakeholders to study different aspects of land and environmental governance. The research focuses on law, policy, land use planning, management and other socio-economic aspects of land. The findings from our research are utilized to advocate for policy reforms and best practices, design innovative programs, and support capacity-building efforts, ensuring that our work has a tangible impact on land governance practices.

Data and Knowledge Management

Effective data and knowledge management is essential for transparent and accountable land administration. Robust data systems and knowledge-sharing platforms enable informed decision-making and improve land management practices by providing accurate and timely information on land ownership, use patterns, and environmental data.

LDGI focuses on undertaking data generation, dissemination and monitoring using tools like Scorecard and LANDex. LANDex is a global land index that puts people at the centre of land data, democratizes land monitoring, and builds a data ecosystem fed from citizens’/ communities’ data. Data generation is used to create awareness on structural inequalities; inform policy and advocate for transparency and accountability from institutions.

Collaboration and Networking

Networking with global partners like the International Land Coalition (ILC) enhances land governance initiatives by promoting shared goals and best practices. By participating in global dialogues and collaborations, stakeholders can leverage diverse experiences and perspectives to address land governance challenges effectively.

LDGI Co-ordinates the International Land Coalition members in Kenya through the National Land Coalition, a multi-stakeholder platform that creates conditions for inclusive engagements on people centred land related policy change. The platform comprises of 15 organizations working under various thematic areas; Women and minority land rights; Governance; Environment and climate change; Locally- managed ecosystems; Community-led forests and rangeland management; Extractives and large-scale land investments; Agricultural production and food security and; Community-led restoration initiatives.
