Dr. Mwenda Makathimo is the Institute's Executive Director. He is passionate about development programmes aimed at improving livelihoods through sustainable land and natural resource management. He over 25 years’ experience in land economics, environmental and land management, policy development, land governance, assets and property valuation, real estate management, investments appraisal and facilities management, boundary delimitation and mapping. Throughout his career, he has served as a member of the taskforce involved in the developing of Community Land regulations 2017, Community Land Act 2016, Land Laws 2012, National Land Commission Rules and Regulations under the National Land Commission Act 2012 ; served as a Commissioner of the Interim Independent Boundaries Commission (IIBRC) 2010 and; currently serves as a member of the Steering and Advisory committee involved in the reviewing of the Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2009 on National Land Policy. He actively participates in various national, regional and international events organized by the Government of Kenya, UN-Habitat, EALAN, the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), International Land Coalition (ILC), and the World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty to advocate for suitable legal, policy and institutional mechanisms to support the realization of both global and national commitments on good governance. Mr Mwathane is the Chairman of LDGI Board of Directors. He has been greatly involved in the development of the Surveying profession in Kenya. Mr. Mwathane has contributed widely to the growth and reform of Kenya’s land sector through policy and legal interventions which include policy dialogues, public forums, print and broadcast media. He has also been widely involved in the formulation and implementation of continental and international land governance instruments. He has consulted for the World Bank, African Development Bank, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and Africa Land Policy Centre. Nationally, Mr. Mwathane has served on a number of taskforces, including the Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development taskforce on the Community Land and Evictions Bill, and the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning taskforce to investigate the processing of extension and renewal of lease. Mr. Edward Kateiya is a member of the Board. He has over 25 years of professional working experience in the public and private sectors of the economy, in different capacities and levels of interaction - locally, nationally, internationally, and globally. He has a wealth of knowledge in community development, multi-stakeholder lobby and advocacy strategies (engagement, consultation, participation, and representation) that foster the interests of farmers and local communities by stimulating beneficial changes in the dialogue process. On a national level, Kateiya has participated in the formulation of the National Land Policy,2009 and served on the task force on electronic land transactions, registration, conveyancing, and other related activities under the Land Registration Act 2012, the Land Act 2012, and the Community Land Act 2016. He is a member of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) Land Sector Board and actively contributes to various technical working groups in the Ministry of Lands, representing farmers' and local communities’ interests in the national land reforms process. Prof. Johnstone Kiamba is a member of the Board. He has over 30 years’ work experience in law, land governance, urban and rural land use planning, housing and infrastructure planning, environmental management and regional development planning in Kenya, South Africa, Botswana and Uganda. Prof. Kiamba has worked, lectured, and consulted as a Senior Planner and Head of Research & Information in Kenya and other countries including South Africa, Botswana, and Swaziland. Nationally, he has played a key role in the formulation laws and policies in Kenya including the Physical and Land Use Planning Act, 2019. He is a lead consultant for the National Environmental Management Agency (NEMA) and Chairman of Multi-media University Council. Catherine Kariuki is a member of Board. She has an extensive work experience in property valuation, property management, land and housing policies, building maintenance, and real estate agency. She has served in the technical working group involved in the review of the Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2009 on National Land Policy; has participated in the formulation of Kenya’s Government Leasing Policy and the Built Environment Bill, the National Land Use Policy, Building Surveyors Act and the National Maintenance Policy Catherine is the President of the African Real Estate Society (AFRES) and a board member of the International Real Estate Society (IRES). She is a member of the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK), a registered and licensed Valuer and Estate Agent. She is a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, Real Estate Department. Catherine holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Land Economics and a Master of Arts degree in Housing Administration from the University of Nairobi and currently pursuing a PhD in Property Management.
